Give an In-Kind Gift of Appreciated Securities
Donating liquid tradeable securities is simple and easy. When you donate tradeable securities to a charity, you not only receive the receipt for the fair market value, you also avoid the capital gain on the appreciated value of those securities. If you prefer to donate bonds or mutual funds, the same benefits apply.
For example, if a donor wants to donate $2,500 to CYM (City Youth Matrix). Instead of writing a check for the $2,500, they talk to their Advisor about donating shares. A stock that was purchased in a non-retirement account for $15 now trades at $25. If they donate 100 shares, they would receive a donation receipt for $2,500. In addition, the donor does not have to pay the capital gain tax on the $10 increase in the value of the shares.
